2015

Krakow Scientific Consortium "Matter - Energy - Future" which includes the Department of Chemistry, founded special scholarships for two of our graduate students: Kamila and Krzysztof.

From 9th to 13th November Grzegorz held a brief internship at the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Warsaw), in the group of Prof. Jadwiga Frelek. During the stay Grzegorz was learning an application of chiroptical methods (VCD and ECD) in the study of structure of chiral molecules, in solutions as well as in the solid state.

Prof. Max Diem from the Northeastern University in Boston (USA) gave a lecture "Infrared Micro-spectroscopy of Human Cells and Tissues: Diagnostic and Prognostic Applications" on October 19th.

In September Kamila has spent 3 weeks in the group of prof. Peter Gardner in Manchester Institute of Biotechnology (MIB), University of Manchester, Manchester (UK). The purpose of this internship was to study the changes in the biochemical composition of various types of liver cells isolated from a dietary murine model of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver using FT-IR imaging with the high magnification system (providing an improvement in spatial resolution). Kamila also worked on the application of advanced chemometric tools to analyze the results.

Kasia Majzner was awarded a START 2015 stipend for young scientists by the Foundation for Polish Science.

Prof. Klaus Gerwert from the Ruhr-University in Bochum (Germany) gave a lecture ,,Time-resolved FTIR of proteins and vibrational imaging of cells and tissue” on September 28th.

Krzysztof, Jakub and Grzegorz got the prizes for the best poster presentations at the 23rd Krakow Conference on Endothelium, VI JCET Seminar (Wierchomla Mala 11-14.06.2015).

Prof. Yukihiro Ozaki from the Kwansei Gakuin University (Japan) gave a lecture "Tip-enhanced Raman Scattering-Principle and Applications” on May, 28th.

On May 26th, a guest of ZOR was Prof. Sebastian Schluecker from the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany. Prof. Schluecker gave a lecture "Surface-Enhanced Vibrational Spectroscopy and Imaging with Tailor-Made Plasmonic Nanoparticles: Applications in Heterogeneous Catalysis and Tissue-Based Cancer Diagnosis".

From 13th to 16th April Agnieszka held a brief internship at the Institute of Photonic Technology in Jena (Germany). The aim of her stay was to gain experience in Raman imaging in vivo.

Marlena spent 10 days at INFN-LNF Synchrotron Radiation Facility (Frascati, Italy), working at the project "Studying a role of the skin sodium accumulation in mineralocorticoidinduced hypertension". Her visit to Frascati allowed her to broaden her knowledge in field of IR spectroscopic imaging of tissues.

Kasia Marzec, Ania, Małgosia and other co-authors have won WITec's Paper Award 2015 with the publication „High-resolution Raman imaging reveals spatial location of heme oxidation sites in single red blood cells of dried smears“. Under more than 80 transmittals WITec's jury draw our paper as being the most interesting, innovative and comprehensing one including results and images with a WITec microscope system.

Marta spent 4 weeks, working in Institute of Physiology II, in Universität Munster. The theme of her project was: “The application of atomic force microscopy to evaluate the difference in cellular stiffness of endothelium”. During internship, she was working with vascular endothelium from control and atherosclerotic mice.

Krzysztof spent one month at FOCAS Research Institute (Dublin Institute of Technology) in the group of Prof. Hugh Byrne. Krzysztof gained great experience of biological cell culture, preparation of biological samples and usage of Raman and confocal laser scanning microscopy for profiling of in vitro cells.

Grzegorz was on a one month internship in the Prague at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in the group of Prof. Petr Bouř, and at the Institute of Physics, Charles University in the group of Prof. Vladimir Baumruk. During the stay Grzegorz was learning an application of chiroptical methods (ROA and VCD) and quantum chemical calculations in the study of structure and conformer equilibria of chiral molecules, by the example of Ala-Ala dipeptide enantiomers.
